The WIU women’s basketball team hit the road towards Fort Wayne, Indiana for a mid-week matchup with the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons. The Leathernecks continued their strong play of late with a huge 90-61 win, and locked up a season sweep of the ‘Dons in the process.
The Leathernecks were led on the night by Olivia Kaufmann who used a big 14-point 4th quarter to rise up to 20 for the game, and added 5 assists and 6 rebounds to round out a wonderful performance. Dani Nichols continued her strong play of late as well, as her 17 points marks her 6th 15+-point performance in her last 7 games. Add in 16 points from Taylor Higginbotham, 11 from Kyra Washington, and you have a well-rounded, fun-to-watch performance on the road from a Leatherneck team who came in with a 1-7 road record.
With now their 5th Summit League win in their last 6 matchups, WIU is riding quite the hot streak as Summit League Tournament time draws ever nearer. They have begun shooting the ball much more efficiently as well, having shot no worse than 51% over the last 3 wins in SL play. WIU will look to keep this hot streak going on Saturday, February 9, when they head to Omaha for a road matchup with the Mavericks that is set to tip at 2 PM.
