MACOMB - Cannabis use is now legal as of January 1, 2020. Only adults 21 years and older are allowed to possess or use recreational marijuana in Illinois. No individual regardless of age can have cannabis on Western University property. No use of marijuana is allowed on campus.
Students under 21 years that are found with cannabis on or off-campus will be held under the Code of Student Conduct. Any employer at any time has the right to adopt a zero-tolerance policy even though it is now legal. Depending on the worksite and their rules, people need to be understanding and respectful. Driving under the influence of marijuana is still considered illegal.
Sources say the government will come out with a breathalyzer similar to the alcohol breathalyzer already being used. Smoking cannabis in any public place, streets, or parks will be considered illegal. Each community has different rules and laws about the possession of cannabis. To be sure if you are following the rules and regulations in your community, check the local ordinance online.
