Stephan “Steve” J. Thomas, 64, of Astoria, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield. Steve was born on September 6th, 1953 in Beardstown, Illinois to his father Willard “Pill” and mother Doris (McCombs) Thomas. He married Laura Rigg on June 21st 1975 in Ashland, Illinois. They lived in Astoria.
Steve is preceded by his father Willard. He is survived by his wife, mother, son (Brandon Thomas), daughter (Shaunea L. Miller and fiancé Gary Nicholas), grandson (Alvin Tracy Miller IV), brother (David and wife, Ruth Thomas) and sister (Teresa and husband Doug Knigge).
Steve graduated from Astoria High School and became a barber in the early 1970’s. He later worked for Caterpillar until he became disabled in 1989 with heart trouble. He was an umpire for several years and also coached boys’ baseball and 5th grade girls’ softball. Steve ran the game clock for football, girls’ and boys’ basketball, and some baseball.
Steve was a member of the Bader Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. Steve loved fishing, bowling, golf and spending time with his grandson.
Services for Stephan J. Thomas are at 11am on Wednesday, June 6th at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL. Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Graveside services are at the Bader Cemetery Memorials are at Bader Christian Church or the South Fulton Athletic Co-Op.
