Mr. Richard "Dick" Rasmussen, 81, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 4:34 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.
Dick was born on May 15, 1935 in Exira, IA the son of Chester Cole and Clara Kathryn Thielen Rasmussen. On June 6, 1968 he married Sally Ann Bradshaw in Carthage. She survives.
Following high school Mr. Rasmussen attended Iowa State College. He then served in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of 1stLieutenant. Following his military service, he attended the University of Iowa Law School. He began practicing law in 1963 where he operated Fort & Fort’s law office in LaHarpe and shortly after he assumed ownership. He continued to practice in the LaHarpe area for many years.
He served as the LaHarpe City Attorney for more than 40 years. Dick served on the First State Bank of Illinois Bank Board for a number of years. He was a member of the Twin Oaks Golf Course in Blandinsville, IL, Macomb Country Club in Macomb, IL, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City, IL. He was an avid avid golfer and Iowa State Cyclones fan. He always enjoyed spending as much time with his grandchildren as possible.
He is survived by his wife, 1 daughter, Susan Jewell of Asbury, IA, 1 son, William A. "Bill" (Betsy Wujek) Rasmussen of Carthage, IL 5 grandchildren, Bryce, Taylor, Olivia, Lucas and Hunter, 2 great-grandchildren, Gannon and Anastasia, nine siblings, Pat (Austin) Rice of Bradenton, FL, Marty Kafer of Concord, CA, Charlie (Jo) Rasmussen of Boise, ID, Katie (Larry) Graff of The Woodlands, TX, Toni (John) Krieger of Iowa City, IA, Gary (Carol Lea) Rasmussen of Exira, IA, Frank (Dorothy) Rasmussen of Tempe, AZ, Mike (Kay) Rasmussen of Exira and Sheila (Roger) Richards of Dallas, TX and two sisters-in-law, Pat Rasmussen of Leawood, KS and Judy Rasmussen of Winterset, IA.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Leo and John Rasmussen and one brother-in-law, Keith Kafer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage with Father Tom Szydlick as celebrant. Burial, with military rites, will be held at the LaHarpe Cemetery.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m.Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. followed by visitation with the family from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Condolences may be left at
