Virginia Metzger, 93, of Plymouth passed away at 8:29 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
She was born on December 7, 1923, at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, to John Philip and May M. Morrow Metzger.
She is survived by close friend and neighbor, Norma Gooding, and distant cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Virginia graduated from Plymouth High School in 1942. She then attended William Woods College, a two year all Womens’ College, in Fulton, Missouri, graduating in 1944. After a summer at Western Illinois University in Macomb, she attended the University of Illinois, Champaign, graduating in 1946 with a Sociology Degree. She moved to Chicago and worked at Marshall Field for five years before moving to Boulder, Colorado to attend grad school. She did not like the grad program and subsequently moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, and then back to Chicago to work at Cook County Hospital. She returned to her beloved hometown of Plymouth when her father became sick to assist her parents, where she continued to live out her life.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in St. Mary with Reverend Jerry Taylor from the First Baptist Church of Plymouth officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded.
Memorials may be made to Hearts of Hancock Humane Society, St. Mary’s Cemetery Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
