Following a three game series sweep of Fort Wayne, Western Illinois Baseball sits at 10-10 in the Summit League, good for third in the league standings.
The Leathernecks notched those wins during what was the final home series of the season. Western won 6-3 Friday, before taking the backend 11-1 and 8-5 in a Saturday doubleheader.
This was also final home series in the careers of seven WIU seniors. Colan Borchers, Sam Cottingham-Beard, Dave Dobrinich, Ryan Dunne, Mitch Ellis, Johnathan Fleek and Pete Minella all were a part of their first career series sweep.
The successfull weekend led to a Summit League Co-Player of the Week award for redshirt freshman Alex Dorethy. The Ipava native and South Fulton product went 7-for-11 (.636) against the Mastodons. His statline included three extra-base hits; two home runs and a double. He added a team-high six RBIs and scored four runs over the weekend.
Werstern Illinois now heads to Brookings, South Dakota, for a weekend series with South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits sit in second place in the Summit League, with a 13-8 record in league play. The two teams have only faced off once this year, with SDSU winning that game 6-3 in 12 innings in Macomb. The final two games of that late-March series were canceled due to inclement weather.
WIU Head Baseball Coach Ryan Brownlee discussed the Fort Wayne series, the accomplishments of Dorethy and the Western seniors, and previewed the upcoming South Dakota State series. You can listen to the interview here.
