According to a report from the Arizona State based publication Sun Devil Sports.com Western Illinois Head Football Coach Charlie Fisher has accepted the job as the Arizona State Wide Receivers Coach. The report surafced a mere twenty four hours after the first day of the NCAA's early signing-day period, in which Fisher's staff received national letters of intent from thirteen players.
While Fisher has yet to comment on any of this, WIU Athletic Director Matt Tanney tweeted about it, saying that Fisher remains the head football coach.
Should Fisher accept this job at Arizona State, it would put the Western program in a precarious situation. Having to find a new head coach in the winter is a tall task. Then again, WIU was faced with a similar situation two years ago, and found Fisher to replace Bob Nielson after his exodus to South Dakota.
The notable difference here is that Fisher would be taking a job as a positional coach at an FBS school, leaving Western with a full staff of assistants, and possibly several candidates for the head coaching vacancy. Nielson accepted a job as the leader of an FCS program, bringing most of his staff from WIU along for the ride.
Until an official word comes on this decision one way or the other, all Western fans can do is wait and see.
